Top: "Sweet Lobotomy" and "Citruside" Bottom: original plush toy by Kristin Tercek
As I was searching the web for more vinyl toys, like a so often do, I came across the independent artist Kristin Tercek. She and her husband (who is also an artist) started their own company, Cha-Pow, for which she designs a line of plush toys titled Cuddly Rigor Mortis. Tercek first started painting these cute, but sinister characters which soon transformed into 3D plush toys.
What I really love about Tercek’s work, is that each character is handmade and personally designed. Tercek admits that there are imperfections and little changes in detail each time she sews a different toy. This hand-made aspect is what draws me to her work because I find it interesting and very genuine to see the little mistakes in Terceks art work.
It is easy to see that Tercek’s inspiration comes from Japanese culture and supernatural themes. Somehow she seems to make the death of these little creatures so ridiculously adorable! In addition to her sewing, Tercek has produced digital animation for Coke commercials, and television shows such as Elmo’s World and Saturday Night Live. All of her plush toys are in high demand, but since sewing is only a hobby for Tercek, it is difficult to purchase them at the moment. Personally, I love ALL of the Cuddle Rigor Mortis characters and I can’t wait for Kristin Tercek to design her next series.
