I have been thinking and researching for this digital intervention and I had an idea. What if I created a page in MSN messenger or facebook page and instead of giving any info I only posted it with a phone number ( a disposable phone maybe) for a day. The idea here would be to turn a digital space into a physical action that would happen in real time. What do you think?

Improv Anywhere

The video “Where in the Hell is Mat” made me think of one of my favorite sites called Improv Anywhere. They are a group of people that put on improv “shows” in public where the public doesn’t know whats happening. It rings of performance art as far as Im concerened and I wanted to share it. My 2 absolute favorites are “Food Court Musical” and “Frozen Grand Central”. I don’t know how relevant this is to our next project but the site is worth visiting for inspiration or just a good chuckle. Here is the link http://improveverywhere.com/2008/03/09/food-court-musical/

public and private with a twist
By traceymeloche on September 29th, 2009, 2:49 pm 2 Comments
I found this photographer, Taryn Simon, on Ted.com.http://www.ted.com/talks/taryn_simon_photographs_secret_sites.html. Laska, you will really appreciate her as she is pretty process driven. Her approach to our topic is a little different as she manages to get herself into very exclusive (and sometimes dangerous places) to get her photos. The lecture is a little long at 17 min, but the first 12 deal with her photos of inaccessable places, and there are some humorous points, including a photo of a Playboy magazine done entirely in brail, the art work at the CIA headquarters-you have to hear her explanation- and the model of the death star from George Lucas’ private collection. Okay, the last one may not be so funny as it is just cool. The last 5 min deals with portraits she took of men that were wrongfully convicted of very serious crimes…because of the use of photography and eye witnesses by law enforcement.

Reading #1: Abstract Hacktivism
By Justin on September 9th, 2009, 1:39 pm 0 Comments

An essential text, abstract hacktivism: the making of a hacker culture, by Otto Von Busch and Karl Palmås, discusses a shift in cultural production and social navigation as they relate the practice of hacking to phenomena such as shopdropping, craftivism, fan fiction, liberation theology, and Spanish social movement YOMANGO.
Download the book in PDF, which is licensed under the General Public Licence, and read the section called, Hacking and Heresy, pages 27 – 60 (please note the page numbers in the bottom corners of each page). Don’t worry, the reading isn’t actually as long as it sounds, and if there’s anything particularly tough for you to understand, don’t spend a lot of time with it, just keep reading—there’s lots of material to talk about in this section!
Be prepared to discuss something particularly interesting (or confusing) from the reading on Monday in class. Feel free to blog about anything particularly interesting from the reading in the meantime.
