Entitled ‘Dervish’, Jennifer Steinkamp’s work was inspired by ritualistic practices of the Mevlavi sect of Islam.
In my opinion, the projection of the piece in within its context is very interesting and enchanting. It gives the viewer a sublime feeling while also engaging in its environment. Jennifer Steinkamp’s istallation piece has been on numerous exhibition
The installation is consist of four high definition projections of individual trees. In her own words she describe the ritual as..
“In the midst of a trance, the dervishes whirl in a motion symbolizing the soul’s release from earthly ties and communication with the divine. The movement of the branches contains elements of both control and lawlessness — while the whirling motion of the trees
is fanciful and seemingly enchanted, the movement is limited by the roots of the trees.”

This piece seems incomplete. I almost feel the artist should have a forest of trees and birds on projection as well creating this ‘virtual, yet somber’ reality. But maybe I need to experience it before I criticize, but I like the idea.
i feel the same way, i think the concept is very interesting, BUT because there is only 4 trees in addition to the spacing of them, the walls around it seem bare. I think i’d enjoy this piece more if the whole gallery was covered in these projections and overwhelmed the viewer with a forest of digital trees
I wouldn’t say that it’s incomplete just because of not witnessing the effect. But i do have to say that simplicity is sometimes what some pieces need.
