Augmented Reality

The technological world is changing so fast!

Augmented reality is a live direct or indirect view of a physical real-world environment whose elements are merged with virtual computer-generated imagery, creating a mixed reality. Here is a little video to introduce you to the technology.

John Mayer’s newest video also is experimenting with augmented reality. There is a good demonstration of how it works around the one minute mark.

Here is what his final product looks like:

As I’m getting more familiar with After Effects I’m starting to realize the endless opportunity provided by digital motion graphics and compositing software. I am very interested in mixing the real world and digital effects and would like to explore this in my next project. In doing this though I would like added digital effects to look realistic. Inspiration for me is Michel Gondry’s work, especially the movie Eternal Sunshine for the Spotless Mind. He makes objects appear and disappear in settings that look 100% realistic. Here is a trailer that shows some amazing effects:

wow! these videos are really cool! I think the reason they appeal to me is because they look so realistic, particularly the Michel Gondry one. I like the integration of the realistic aspects and the digital aspects and how they combine to look so realistic. Cool find!

What a great development for the digital art world! This technology allows the realistic and the imaginative to blend so seamlessly – I can definitely see this technique being used alot in the near futrure, as alot of artists’s work is based upon the the converging of fantasy and reality. The videos really gave a sense of the different ways in which augmented reality can be used. Very informative!

I’ve seen Eternal Sunshine before and I definitely noticed that. It looks so realistic and seamless. The movies makes you question whether it is real, or (in Jim Carey’s character’s) imagination.

that i-magic book is ridiculous! I still prefer old fashion pop-ups!

  5. kristiner says:

Wow, this is so fascinating! I agree with Christine I could see this technique being used a lot in the future, numerous things. But I am not sure if I like the idea of this blur between fantasy and reality.

I agree with kristine, its bizarre not knowing whether or not its real or fictional, but definitely a huge advancement in technology / digital art… I can for sure see this technique becoming very popular in the near future
