Texts from Last Night

I figured since many of our discussions in the mock critiques involved text messaging as part of the web interventions project, I would post this website. Some of you may have seen this website before. The Website is called Texts From Last Night, and it is quite hilarious.

textsuntitled

I think it is important that the area code is included in the post for the text, it gives a sense of knowing who the person is without revealing their identity. Hopefully this helps some people out with their projects, if not, I hope you get a laugh out ouf it!

Project 4

so the blog i started is here.

the guidelines for my project i’m thinking are as follows.
-email me your story/sentence/paragraph at enjoicoca@hotmail.com  ”re:project 4″

-the story/sentence/paragraph shouldn’t be made up. I would prefer it to be something you’ve felt before or currently or even something you think represents something you’ve felt, or something you think represents you!                                    (if you want to make it up then go ahead. i will try and interpret it anyways.)

-i might stick with interpreting them into drawings, or i might even create an instrumentation for each story…for now i think i might stick with drawing.

-only i will know which interpretation attaches to which story (in turn attaches to which specific person). so when i post the story along with my interpretation on my blog (drawing or mp3 instrumentation…) i will not put your name.

comment back if you feel i should change something!

-merci

PLEASE ATTACH YOUR NAME TO THE EMAIL SO I KNOW WHO IT IS….i won’t post your name in the blog. this needs to happen. it emphasizes the intimacy you trust me with in knowing your name.

Technologies of the Future.

The first video demonstrates the limitless possibilities in technology. A team of geniuses at MIT has developed the possible newest bit of technology for the next part of the 21st century. This invention is called Sixth Sense. This technology relies on bodily gestures and the most interesting part is where and how the information can be easily projected to users.

This second video shows a developemental project undertaken by Nokia Research Center and with the collaboration of  Cambridge Nanoscience Center to produce a phone that is entirely nano-technology driven.

Nokia Morph is a concept demonstrating some of the possibilities nanotechnologies might enable in future communication devices. Morph can sense its environment, is energy harvesting and self cleaning .
Morph is a flexible two-piece device that can adapt its shape to different use modes. Nanotechnology enables to have adaptive materials yet rigid forms on demand.

Fallen Art

This video is about a military general who is a self proclaimed artist. The methods  that he creates his art work is extremely deranged.  It seems that the generals are bored and suffering from the hardships of war. In 2006 Fallen Art won a BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) award in a short animated film.

“Street Wars” – SpY Interventions

Hello Everyone!

So for this week’s blog post, I wanted to do something that pertained to the project. These pictures were taken by a Madrid artist. He first appeared in the 80′s and was known nationally for being a graffiti artist. His art started to transform and take a bit of a different route in the 90′s when he was experimenting with art interventions that were related to the urban environment.

I looked at all of his artwork on his web page and they have a very playful, comical, creative and sometimes serious aspect to his interventions. As he says in the about section on his website, his interventions are “Full of both irony and a positive sense of humor, they appear to inspire a smile, a thought, a conscience to help a little bit more lucid.”

He is a very talented and experienced artist that I really enjoyed looking at all his pieces and interventions of art. Out of all of his art pieces, I chose this one because it just stuck out to me. It is so creative and funny. At first I thought it was those lines for the road, but then I saw the “space ship” and the glow sticks to be it’s ammo. I recommend everyone look at some of his pieces of art and maybe that can spark an interest or thought?

Good luck everyone on the last and final project. I can’t wait to see what everyone comes up with!

Project 4 Ideas

Ok so, I’ve thought through a lot of ideas for this project, and I’m having a hard time deciding on what I want to do. Originally I was going to make a facebook application, until i realized how ridiculously complicated it was, and then I came up with the idea of using pop up windows to communicate some point / intervene on peoples ability to navigate around their desktop / programs. I like this idea, and (surprisingly) know how to technically set up this idea. What I would still need to decide on would be what these windows would say and the significance of what is said. But over the weekend, I’ve kind of come across another idea that I’m not sure what to do with. I was thinking about making a webpage, and all it would say is “loading” and have an image of a progress bar.. but never fully ‘finish’ loading. I like this idea because as an internet user, the most annoying thing that completely interrupts what your doing is when a page wont load or is taking too long. So i figured by making a webpage that never loads, it will always force the viewer into that frustrated state of mind, and curiosity of will it ever load.. and if it does what is the content of the website. Let me know what your ideas and criticisms, because I’ve been really indecisive and need to make a decision soon.

Success Of The H1N1 Booth

Alright so I had a booth up last Wednesday broadcasting my H1N1 video. I made a whiteboard sign and designed hundreds of business card size info printouts. The little printout directed people to watch the youtube video.

The experience taught me that not many people have the time for a video. The average amount of time people would spend on it, was the amount of time it took to walk past the booth. I did however have about 5 people who sat/stood to watch the whole film. (This was asking a lot since the video was 7 Minutes long!)

What turned out to be most successful was the printouts. After handing several out, the video now has 399 views.

The only challenge I faced was talking with one man who was worried because he had made his daughter take the vaccine earlier. He wasn’t mad at me he just wanted answers. But don’t we all!

Anyway that was the outcome of my first live public art demonstration.

Self-Control

selfcontrol-window

We all know that it’s hard to write an essay or actually get work done on our computers.  There are so many distractions like, Facebook, imdb, Wikipedia…anything!  Self control is an application (for Mac’s) that blocks our access to incoming and outgoing email, and websites of your choice.  You can block these things, but still use a web browser for something else.  For instance, if you had to do research online.  As soon as the timer is set, you can not stop the program by turning off your computer or even deleting the application!

This application was developed by Charlie Stigler for Steve Lambert at Eyebeam.  Stigler is a high school student in the US who is interested in computer security.

Justin actually mentioned another program similar to this in class.  I definitely need this application, however, I would probably find something else to distract me, like surfing Google or online shopping.  I love the idea though.  When it comes to homework very few student have the self control to focus on one thing at a time.

I need help!

For a few weeks now I have had this idea for my Web Interventions assignment but I don’t know where to go with it.

I’m thinking of using an online dating website.  I’d make up a fake account, or maybe take a risk and put my own honest personal information into it.  Maybe I could make several accounts.  I just don’t know where I’m going with this though.  Of course, I’m not supposed to be able to already know what the end result would be (I guess that’s the point of this project) but I don’t know what aspects of online dating, dating in general, the Internet, etc. I should be aiming to learn about.

I thought of perhaps creating two fake accounts with the exact same profile information except I’d use different profile pictures.  Maybe one would be an average real-life woman, and the other would be a Photoshopped version of her to turn her into a supermodel or something.  I’m actually not sure if I want to use a male or female for my fake profile(s).

I’m really stuck and would appreciate any of your thoughts on this.  I think this could be really interesting but I need to narrow down some ideas and finally start!  If I can start this soon enough maybe I can get some exciting conversations with people who are interested in “me” and I’ll show them to you guys.
